Statement: Trump Administration Reissues Sanctions Waivers

Today, for the second time since taking office, the Trump Administration reissued waivers of nuclear-related sanctions as required under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This decision demonstrates yet again that Iran remains in full compliance with the deal, as verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency. While we applaud the Administration’s decision to uphold America’s end of the bargain, we are concerned that the President will pursue a strategy that could jeopardize this successful nonproliferation agreement. Our strongest allies stand behind the JCPOA because it is successfully restraining Iran’s nuclear program and bolstering international security. This deal was not negotiated to end all of Iran’s malign behaviors, but it provides a solution to the most imminent threat, and with nuclear weapons off the table the world can work on solutions to  other destabilizing behaviors through diplomacy. America’s leaders in the Administration and on Capitol Hill must wield American power responsibly, work with our allies, and choose not to manufacture a nuclear crisis. When we are already faced with a nuclear-armed North Korea, it would be reckless to undermine a deal that is working to prevent Iran from presenting a similar threat. Therefore, we urge the White House to recertify Iran’s compliance by October 15 to protect American interests and national security.
